FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Celebration Town Center
Osceola County · Central Florida
The downtown of the town Disney built, laid out by well-known architects in an early twentieth-century style around a lake.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Disney began Celebration in 1994 on about 4,900 acres inside the Reedy Creek Improvement District, spending an estimated 2.5 billion dollars on it. The plan followed new urbanism: houses close to the street, porches, sidewalks, and a walkable center instead of a strip. Jacquelin T. Robertson and Robert A. M. Stern drew the master plan, and the town center buildings were handed to a roster of names unusual for a suburban downtown. Michael Graves designed the post office. Philip Johnson designed the welcome center. Charles Moore, Cesar Pelli and Robert Venturi all contributed. The result is a compact center of shops, restaurants and offices around a lake, built in an early twentieth-century manner and deliberately not zoned for high-density housing. Disney divested most of its control years ago, though some of its business units still keep offices there. The population reached 11,178 at the 2020 census, up from 2,736 in 2000.
