Orlando Science Center

Orange County · Central Florida

A 207,000-square-foot science center in Loch Haven Park with four exhibit floors, a giant screen theater and a public observatory.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The institution was incorporated in 1955 and opened in Loch Haven Park in 1960 as the Central Florida Museum. The present building had its grand opening on February 1, 1997, and runs to about 207,000 square feet, which makes it a serious museum rather than a rainy-day stop. Exhibits are spread over several floors under names that say what they are: NatureWorks for Florida habitats with live alligators and turtles, KidsTown for the youngest visitors, Kinetic Zone for physics and engineering, DinoDigs for fossils, The Hive and the Fusion Gallery for making things. The Crosby Observatory on the sixth floor holds Florida's largest public refractor telescope along with other instruments, and opens for viewing on clear evenings. The Dr. Phillips CineDome puts films on a screen of about 8,000 square feet. More than half a million people come in a year. Loch Haven Park also holds the Orlando Museum of Art and two theaters, so the science center sits inside a cluster rather than on its own
