ABOUT THIS PLACE

A group of art enthusiasts founded the Orlando Art Association in 1924. It became the Loch Haven Art Center in 1960 and the Orlando Museum of Art in 1986, and it stands at 2416 North Mills Avenue in Loch Haven Park, next door to the Orlando Science Center. The permanent collection runs past 2,400 objects. Its strongest holding is the art of the ancient Americas, described as among the finest of its kind in the southeastern United States, alongside American art from the eighteenth century to 1945, contemporary work and African art. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, takes part in the North American Reciprocal Museums program, and was named a major cultural institution by the State of Florida in 1985. It went through a serious crisis in June 2022, when the FBI seized 25 paintings attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat from an exhibition after their authenticity was challenged. Leadership changed and the museum faced real financial difficulty afterward
