Lake Eola Park

Orange County · Central Florida

The park at the center of downtown Orlando, built around a 23-acre sinkhole with a lit fountain standing in it.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The lake is not a lake in the ordinary sense. It is a sinkhole, 23 acres across, averaging about eleven and a half feet deep but dropping to just over eighty feet at the collapse itself, a hundred feet east of the fountain. Jacob Summerlin gave the land to the city in 1883. Judge Robert Summerlin named the water after his fiancee, who died weeks before their wedding. The fountain in the middle went in first in 1912, was replaced in 1957, and was named the Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain in 1966 for the man who pushed hardest for it. Lightning wrecked it in 2009 and it started up again on July 4, 2011, and it still runs a light and music show after dark. A sidewalk of about nine-tenths of a mile circles the water, which makes it a common running and walking loop for people who live downtown. The Walt Disney Amphitheater sits on the west side and carries community events through the year. The Orlando Farmers Market runs every Sunday from ten until three
