Orange County Regional History Center

Orange County · Central Florida

Central Florida's history museum, in the restored 1927 Orange County courthouse in downtown Orlando.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The building came first. Murry S. King, Orlando's first registered architect, designed a neoclassical courthouse that cost nearly a million dollars and was dedicated on October 12, 1927. It served as the county courthouse, with the jail on the upper floor along with quarters for the jailer and his wife and an infirmary. When the county built a new high-rise courthouse in 1995, civic leaders pushed to turn the old one into a regional history museum rather than clear it, and the History Center opened in September 2000. Five floors of exhibits cover about 2,000 years, from the first people of the region through Spanish contact, cattle and citrus, the land booms, tourism and the arrival of the theme parks. A restored courtroom is part of the tour. The Joseph L. Brechner Research Center on the fifth floor holds the Historical Society of Central Florida's special collections, a research library and archives of more than 5,000 volumes, free to use by appointment. It stands at 65 East Central Boulevard
