ABOUT THIS PLACE

Jeannette Genius McKean founded the museum in 1942 and named it for her grandfather, Charles Hosmer Morse. Her husband Hugh McKean was its first director, and the two of them gathered Tiffany material over decades, much of it rescued from Laurelton Hall, Tiffany's Long Island estate, after a fire there in 1957. The collection covers every medium he worked in and every period of his life: leaded-glass windows, lamps, Favrile blown glass, pottery, jewelry and enamel. The centerpiece is the chapel interior Tiffany designed for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, about 39 feet by 23, taken apart and stored for generations and reassembled here, opening to the public in April 1999 for the first time in more than a century. A wing of 6,000 square feet devoted to Laurelton Hall opened in 2011. The museum moved to 445 North Park Avenue in 1995 and now holds more than 19,000 square feet of public space
