ABOUT THIS PLACE

Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, the park Walt Disney World was built around. It covers about 107 acres in Bay Lake, laid out as a hub and spokes: Main Street U.S.A. runs from the gate to Cinderella Castle, and from there the paths fan out into Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Main Street is modeled on Marceline, Missouri, where Walt Disney grew up, and is built in forced perspective so the upper floors are smaller than the ground floor and the street looks longer than it is. The whole park stands on a raised platform about 108 feet above sea level, because Florida's water table made digging impractical, so the service tunnels called utilidors were built at ground level and the park was built above them. That is why a visitor almost never sees a delivery truck. Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Jungle Cruise have all been running for decades. It is the most visited theme park in the world, year after year, which is worth knowing before choosing a date
