Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park
Orange County · Central Florida
A 580-acre Disney park that is also an accredited zoo, holding about 2,000 animals from around 200 species.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day, April 22, 1998, and at 580 acres it was the largest theme park in the world when it opened. Most of that ground is animal habitat rather than midway. The park is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and keeps roughly 2,000 animals from about 200 species. The Tree of Life stands at the center, an artificial baobab 145 feet tall and 50 feet across, carved with animal forms and holding a theater inside its trunk. Kilimanjaro Safaris in the Africa section is the heart of the place: an open-sided truck across a large field enclosure where giraffe, elephant, rhinoceros and antelope are loose rather than penned. Pandora, the World of Avatar opened in 2017 with Flight of Passage and the Na'vi River Journey. Expedition Everest runs in the Asia section. DinoLand U.S.A. is being replaced by a new area themed to tropical America
