George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park
Nassau County · North Florida & First Coast
A decommissioned road bridge of 1949 across Nassau Sound, kept as a fishing pier when its replacement was built.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It ran a mile between Big Talbot Island and Amelia Island until the new A1A bridge took the traffic. It was going to be demolished, and was saved in 1998 through the work of Florida Representative George Crady, whose name it now carries. Sections in the middle of the sound have since collapsed and have not been rebuilt, so it is not possible to walk across; the two halves are fished from either end. The north end is reached from Amelia Island State Park and the south end from the Sawpit Creek area of Big Talbot Island State Park, where the grass flats fish better. Redfish and tarpon come through the sound every fall. Birders work the south span for white pelicans and roseate spoonbills. Open eight until sunset, three dollars a vehicle, restrooms at the north end only. No pets. Do not swim here, the currents through the sound are dangerous, and there is no shade on the bridge
