WATER & COAST
Egans Creek Greenway
Nassau County · North Florida & First Coast
More than three hundred acres of salt marsh and tidal creek running north to south through Fernandina Beach.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It is a rare thing: undeveloped marsh kept inside the town rather than outside it, bought with help from the Florida Communities Trust and opened to the public in 2000. Three and a half miles of connected trail run through it and a walker can make loops of up to six miles. Most of the paths are wide grassed roads, easy going, with two short mountain bike trails blazed purple for riders who want something harder. The southern end is freshwater marsh covered in duckweed; the northern end is brackish and moves with the tide. Alligators are common and so are marsh rabbits, turtles, raccoons, bobcats, coyotes, deer and a long list of birds, which is why it is on the state birding trail. The main trailhead is at the Atlantic Recreation Center, 2500 Atlantic Avenue, with parking, restrooms, picnic tables and a nature pavilion. A boardwalk crosses Egans Creek. Open sunrise to sunset, free, dogs on a leash
