MUSEUM & CULTURE

Amelia Island Museum of History

Nassau County · North Florida & First Coast

The county history museum at 233 South Third Street, in the old Nassau County jail.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The building went up in 1938 in the Moderne style and held prisoners until the county opened a new jail in 1979. The Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society began working toward a museum in 1975, moved it through several homes, and eventually took a ninety-nine year lease on the jail at a dollar a year. It was the Eight Flags Museum for a time, then the Florida Museum of Transportation and History, and took its present name in the middle 1980s after it started a spoken history program recording residents. The collection now runs to more than eleven thousand artifacts, photographs, books and archival items, much of it from the Decker Collection. A research library opens Tuesdays and Thursdays from ten until four and by appointment, which is the draw for anyone tracing a family here. Docent-led tours run Monday to Saturday at eleven and two and on Sunday at two. The building went on the National Register in 2009
