ABOUT THIS PLACE

The stone and brick came from the 1820 lighthouse on Cumberland Island, just across the water in Georgia, taken down and carried over. It is a brick tower finished in stucco, fifty feet when it was built and raised to sixty-four in 1881, putting the light a hundred and seven feet above the sea. Fourteen lamps with reflectors lit it in 1839; a third-order Fresnel lens replaced them in 1903 and that same lens is still in the lantern. The light was automated in 1970 and it remains an active aid to navigation, flashing white every ten seconds. The Coast Guard handed it to the City of Fernandina Beach in 2001. The keeper's house is a private residence, so the grounds are opened only at set times, with viewing on Saturdays and guided tours twice a month. The address is 215 and a half Lighthouse Circle. It went on the National Register on February 13, 2003
