Museum of Florida History

Leon County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The state history museum, in the R. A. Gray Building at 500 South Bronough Street in Tallahassee.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It opened in 1977 and its job is the whole of Florida rather than one region, which is why it is the sensible first stop for anyone trying to understand the state before deciding where in it to live. The permanent galleries cover more than fourteen thousand years. A mastodon skeleton stands near the entrance. Beyond it are a reconstructed early native dwelling, a Spanish ship and fort, a Spanish house, maritime material recovered from wrecks along the coast, a citrus packing house of the kind that used to stand in every grove town, a reconstructed steamboat, and the experience of Florida soldiers in the Second World War. Temporary exhibitions change through the year and a traveling exhibit program sends smaller displays out to communities around the state. The museum also runs the Knott House at 301 East Park Avenue, built in 1843, used as Union army headquarters, and the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read out to the people of Tallahassee on May 20, 1865
