ABOUT THIS PLACE

The old building was finished in 1845, the year Florida became a state. Frank Pierce Milburn enlarged it in 1902 and gave it the art glass dome and the red and white striped awnings it is known by. By the late 1970s the plan was to knock it down; a campaign led by Secretary of State Bruce Smathers stopped that, and the building was instead taken back to how it looked in 1902. It now holds the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, which covers the working of state government and the political history that went with it. Directly behind it stands the tower put up in 1977 to designs by Edward Durell Stone and Associates with Reynolds, Smith and Hills. It rises three hundred and forty-five feet over twenty-two visible floors and holds the governor, the Senate and the House. The observation deck on the twenty-second floor is three hundred and seven feet above the plaza and on a clear day the view reaches about twenty miles. Open Monday to Friday from eight until five, closed state holidays. Groups of fifteen or more can book a guided tour
