FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Doak S. Campbell Stadium

Leon County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The Florida State University football stadium at 403 Stadium Drive, opened on October 7, 1950, and named for the university's first president.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It held fifteen thousand people when it opened. It was enlarged repeatedly, reached eighty-two thousand three hundred, and was brought down to sixty-seven thousand two hundred and seventy-seven by the renovation completed in 2024, which replaced banks of bench seating with wider seats and better access. That makes it the third largest stadium in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2004 the Florida Legislature added the name of the coach Bobby Bowden, so the full title is Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium. The brick facing was built to match the rest of the campus, and the University Center wrapped around the bowl holds classrooms, academic offices and university services, so the building works six days a week rather than six Saturdays a year. Before each home game a rider in the role of Chief Osceola carries a burning spear onto the field on an Appaloosa horse named Renegade. A nineteen-foot bronze of the two by Fritz White stands outside
