FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Challenger Learning Center

Leon County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A science education center with a space mission simulator, an IMAX theater and a planetarium, at 200 South Duval Street in downtown Tallahassee.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Challenger Center network was founded by the families of the seven crew who died aboard the space shuttle Challenger in January 1986, who wanted something built that would put children in front of the work rather than the accident. The Tallahassee center opened in March 2003 and is the official school outreach facility of the Florida A and M University and Florida State University College of Engineering. It was set up by Norman Thagard, a retired astronaut and associate dean, C. J. Chen, then dean of the college, and Winston Scott, also a retired astronaut. Between forty and sixty thousand students come through each year from a service area covering sixty-seven counties across three states. The mission simulator puts a class into a mission control room and a spacecraft at the same time and makes them work together. The IMAX screen and the Fogg Planetarium are open to the general public on a published schedule. The number is 850-645-7827
