WATER & COAST
Suwannee River
Lafayette County · North Florida & First Coast
The river that forms the northern and eastern boundary of Lafayette County, and the reason the county looks the way it does.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Everything in this county faces the Suwannee or turns its back on it. The two state parks are on it, Troy Spring and Lafayette Blue Springs, and both exist because first-magnitude springs feed into it here. The Suwannee River Wilderness Trail runs the length of the river as a paddling route, with river camps spaced a day apart, and Adams Tract is the Lafayette County one, at river mile 85.5. Below Adams Tract it is 9.3 miles of paddling to Branford. The water is tea-colored from tannins out of the swamps upstream, and where a spring comes in you can watch the clear water and the dark water refuse to mix for a while. Boat ramps at the state parks and at Ezell Landing give access. The river is the county's western boundary with Suwannee County to the north and east, and the towns and landings all sit where the high ground meets it
