WATER & COAST

Lafayette Blue Springs State Park

Lafayette County · North Florida & First Coast

A spring park at 799 Northwest Blue Spring Road, Mayo, built around a natural bridge of rock.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The spring runs on the western bank of the Suwannee. Water comes up out of deep sinkholes in the hardwood forest above, runs down a ravine, disappears and surfaces again lower down, and the road and the trail here both rest on natural bridges left by that karst. Over the spring itself a rocky natural bridge divides two pools when the water sits at normal river level, which is the image people photograph. Below it the cave system runs more than two miles of mapped passage into the Floridan aquifer. Certified cave divers in teams of at least two register at the ranger station; one route goes through from Lafayette Blue and surfaces at Green Sink. The Green Sink Trail loops half a mile above the ravines, with about another mile of path linking the picnic area, the basin and the campground. Cabins stand on stilts above the bluff, with primitive walk-in sites and a group camp. Open eight until sundown, five dollars a vehicle
