WILDLIFE & CONSERVATION
Mallory Swamp Wildlife Management Area
Lafayette County · North Florida & First Coast
More than thirty-one thousand acres in southeastern Lafayette County, southwest of Branford.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Suwannee River Water Management District owns it and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages it with them. A serious wildfire went through in 2001 and the place is still recovering from it, which is the honest thing to say about the look of the ground in parts. Since then the water levels have been restored to something like their natural state, which is what the native plant communities need to come back, and the cypress swamps, titi thickets, peat bogs and upland patches are regrowing on that basis. There are roughly a hundred miles of grassy road through it. Horses are allowed on the marked trails and roads in daylight, and an ATV trail runs from late April to the middle of September. White-tailed deer, wild hogs and turkeys are the game, and limpkins, wood storks and great blue herons are the birds people come for. There is no camping. Fishing is open year round with a license
