WILDLIFE & CONSERVATION
Steinhatchee Springs Wildlife Management Area
Lafayette County · North Florida & First Coast
Over twenty thousand acres spread across Lafayette, Dixie and Taylor counties, managed with the water district.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission runs it in cooperation with the Suwannee River Water Management District. The Steinhatchee River is the spine of it: twenty-eight miles from its start in the upper reaches of Mallory Swamp down to the Gulf, and north of Tennille it drops underground and comes back up about half a mile further south, which is ordinary behavior for a river crossing limestone and still catches people out. The ground is floodplain forest, cypress swamp, xeric hammock and pine plantation. Access is limited by the swampy nature of most of it and by the lack of roads; entrances and river access points are marked with brown public signs off US 51 and the graded roads beside it. White-tailed deer, wild hogs, turkeys, bobcats and a long list of birds live here. Fishing is open all year with a license. There is no camping, and motor vehicles are held to named or numbered roads
