Museum of Discovery and Science

Broward County · South Florida & the Keys

A science museum of 150,000 square feet at 401 Southwest Second Street in Fort Lauderdale.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It began in 1976 as the Discovery Center and opened to the public the following year. The present building opened in November 1992, paid for by a capital campaign of thirty-three million dollars, and the museum now takes about 425,000 visitors a year, including some 90,000 schoolchildren on field trips. The exhibits are interactive throughout rather than behind glass. The EcoDiscovery Center, a wing costing twenty-five million dollars, opened in 2011 and deals with the Florida environment: the Everglades, the water, the storms. Science Park followed in 2018, 27,000 square feet of outdoor exhibits on the museum's own ground. The Sprouting STEM Early Childhood Learning Lab opened in 2020 for children up to the age of six, which fills the gap most science museums leave. The AutoNation IMAX Theater is on the site; it opened with the building in 1992 and was renamed in 2007 after a major gift. The museum opens Monday through Saturday from ten in the morning until five, and Sunday from noon until five
