Broward County · South Florida & the Keys

A 1920 house and its gardens at 900 North Birch Road, standing on land that was a wedding present.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Hugh Taylor Birch, a Chicago lawyer, property investor and naturalist, bought this stretch of oceanfront in 1895. In 1919 he gave a piece of it to his daughter Helen and her husband, the Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett, as a wedding gift, and Bartlett built the house the following year. He had come out of the Royal Academy in Munich in 1895 and his work hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Institute; here he painted the murals and the faux finishes through the main house himself, so the building is as much his work as his design. Frederic married again in 1931, to Evelyn, who took up painting the year after and worked hard at it for six years, showing in Boston, New York and Indianapolis. Her pictures hang in the Carl J. Weinhardt Gallery on the property. A nonprofit organization runs the estate, set up to keep the art, the history and the grounds together rather than let the land be sold off, which on this piece of coast is the whole point. Self-guided tours run Tuesday through Sunday, eleven in the morning until four, closed Mondays and holidays
