Flamingo Gardens

Broward County · South Florida & the Keys

Sixty acres of botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary at 3750 South Flamingo Road in Davie, established in 1927.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It is one of the oldest places of its kind in South Florida. More than three thousand species of plant grow here, rare, exotic, tropical, subtropical and native, under a canopy of old trees that has been left to mature for close to a century. The wildlife sanctuary holds what the organization calls the largest collection of Florida native wildlife anywhere, and the animals in it are largely ones that cannot be released: injured, orphaned, or otherwise unable to live wild again. The Wray Home Museum stands on the property and shows how the place began. A tram runs through the grounds for anyone who does not want to walk the whole thing. Flamingo Gardens describes itself as an Everglades learning center, and what it teaches is the natural and cultural history of South Florida and the Everglades rather than the plants alone. It is a registered nonprofit. The gates open at 9:30 in the morning and close at five, with last entry at four, every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The telephone number is 954-473-2955
