QUESTIONS THAT NAME THIS PLACE ABOUT THIS PLACE
Sebastian Inlet State Park sits on the A1A barrier island south of Melbourne Beach, either side of the inlet itself. Surfers come for the breaks known as First Peak and Monster Hole, the jetties that cut into the Atlantic are used for fishing, and the calmer Indian River Lagoon side is where the kayaking is. The park holds two museums, the McLarty Treasure Museum covering the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet and the Sebastian Fishing Museum covering the local fishing industry, along with a campground for RVs and tents and a boat ramp. The park covers 760 acres across the Brevard and Indian River county line and was created on August 12, 1970, with the state completing the land purchase in 1971. Fishing jetties run out from both sides of the inlet into the ocean. A Spanish fleet went down off this coast in 1715, and the ground where the survivors camped went on the National Register of Historic Places on the same day the park was created. The McLarty Treasure Museum stands on that spot and shows what has been recovered from the wrecks. This is the southern end of Brevard County, a little over an hour from Melbourne
GOOD TO KNOW
Construction on the Sebastian Inlet bridge along Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway began May 2026. Expect traffic delays, construction noise and possible changes to the campground entrance; camping reservations may be cancelled. Beach access from the south side is unavailable during the works. On weekends and peak periods the north side may reach capacity and close temporarily.
