ABOUT THIS PLACE

Turkey Creek Sanctuary is a City of Palm Bay nature preserve reached through the Margaret Hames Nature Center on Port Malabar Boulevard, next to the Tony Rosa Community Center, which is also where the public parking is. The nature center is staffed by volunteers rather than paid employees. Admission is free and the trails are ADA accessible. The land was given to the Florida Audubon Society and the City of Palm Bay in 1978, and by 1994 some 113 acres were protected. There are 1.85 miles of boardwalk through the sanctuary and another mile and a half of jogging trail through native forest. The habitats are salt hammock and sand pine ridge, which puts dry scrub directly beside wet ground. Turkey Creek itself is a breeding ground for both saltwater and freshwater fish, and there is a canoe deck to get onto the water. Manatees come up the creek. The Margaret Hames Nature Center opened in 1992 and runs environmental education and nature day camps out of the building
