ABOUT THIS PLACE

Brevard Zoo on North Wickham Road in Melbourne is run by the East Coast Zoological Foundation and accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. What sets it apart is that you can get onto the water inside it: guided kayak tours run down the Nyami Nyami River past giraffe and rhinos in Expedition Africa, and self-guided kayaking crosses the restored wetlands in Wild Florida. Above ground, the Treetop Trek courses include a canopy walk and a separate course built for children, and the Cape to Cairo Express train makes a ten-minute circuit past camels, African cattle and antelope. Parking is free, and the zoo opens every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. It covers seventy-five acres at 8225 North Wickham Road and opened on March 26, 1994. More than sixteen thousand volunteers built it, starting in 1992, which the zoo calls the largest volunteer community build of its kind anywhere. It holds between 790 and 900 animals of more than 170 species from five continents, spread across five areas: Expedition Africa, Lands of Change, Wild Florida, Rainforest Revealed and Paws On, with the Treasures of the Caribbean trail alongside. Paws On has an outdoor aquarium themed on the Indian River Lagoon, with tarpon, stingrays and black drum in it. The conservation work includes rehabilitating and releasing American black bears and breeding spider monkeys
