ABOUT THIS PLACE

The bus tour goes through the security gates onto Kennedy Space Center itself, stopping at the Gantry at Launch Complex 39 and at the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Back at the visitor complex, attractions and tours are grouped by era, from the earliest space programs through to current missions. Longer experiences are booked separately and are worth choosing before you arrive, since Fly With An Astronaut runs about five hours and Mars Base 1 about seven. The complex sits on Merritt Island and is operated by Delaware North rather than by NASA. It opened on August 1, 1967, as Spaceport USA and now takes around 1.7 million people a year. The orbiter Space Shuttle Atlantis has been on display since June 29, 2013, tilted at forty-three degrees with its payload bay doors open, the angle only people in orbit had ever seen. The Rocket Garden outside the entrance stands Mercury-Redstone, Juno I and Saturn IB vehicles upright, with a Delta II added in March 2021. Heroes and Legends, opened in 2016, holds the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame along with the Gemini 9A capsule and consoles from Mercury Control. The Apollo/Saturn V Center, six miles north and reached only by the bus, is built around a restored Saturn V, with the Apollo 14 command module and lunar samples beside it. Two IMAX theaters run films
