American Space Museum & Walk of Fame
Brevard County · Atlantic Coast
A Titusville museum about the people who built and launched the rockets rather than the ones who rode them, holding real firing room consoles from Complex 39.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The American Space Museum sits on Pine Street in downtown Titusville and is run by the U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation, a non-profit formed in 1988 after a local physician wrote to the city council suggesting a project to preserve space history. Its emphasis falls on the people who built and launched the rockets rather than the ones who rode them, and much of the collection was given by those space workers themselves, along with astronauts, NASA and contractor companies. Galleries cover Mercury and Gemini, Apollo, the Shuttle and a Women of Space room, and a good deal of the hardware is the real thing, including consoles taken out of the Launch Control Center firing rooms at Complex 39 and the Atlas Centaur consoles from pad 36A, which the museum says are all that remains of a launch complex razed after forty years of use. The Walk of Fame itself is a short walk away in Space View Park on the Indian River, where the foundation built five monuments engraved with the names of space program workers and then donated them to the City of Titusville
