FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Science and Discovery Center of Northwest Florida

Bay County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A hands-on children's science center that traces back to 1969 and reopened in 2021 after Hurricane Michael.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The idea for this place came from local civic organizations in 1967 and the first exhibit opened in 1969. The building it uses now went up in 1981, and it took its present name, the Science and Discovery Center of Northwest Florida, in April 2011. Hurricane Michael damaged it, and it reopened in May 2021 with new exhibits. Its stated aim is to educate and inspire children through hands-on, interactive exhibits and programs that promote the discovery of science, and the programming around that is broad: camps, school field trips, homeschool sessions, birthday parties and a preschool academy. Teachers in the Bay district are admitted free on production of a school ID. It stands at 308 Airport Road in Panama City and opens Tuesday through Saturday, ten in the morning until four. Inside are Exploration Alley, Construction Junction, the Glow Room, a sensory room, a medical arena, KeKe's Animal Clinic, a Boat Room with a shark tank, and an Air and Space section. Reptile encounters bring out live animals. Outside there is a pirate ship called the USS Discovery and a nature trail with 1,500 feet of path and boardwalk running out through the wetland. The number is 850-769-6128
