Man in the Sea Museum
Bay County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
A diving museum holding the United States Navy's SEALAB I, open since 1982.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Man in the Sea Museum has been keeping the history of diving and underwater exploration since 1982. The object most people come for is SEALAB I, the United States Navy habitat, which sits on the site. Around it are military diving equipment, submersibles, and a long run of diving masks and helmets showing how the gear changed decade by decade. Many of the displays are hands-on rather than behind glass. It is classed as a military diving museum, which is a fair description of what is in it: Navy and working-diver history rather than a general aquarium. It stands at 17314 Panama City Beach Parkway. You can walk inside SEALAB I, which was the first underwater habitat the United States Navy ever built. The museum was founded as the Institute of Diving, which still owns it. The displays cover the progress of underwater technology from the earliest days of diving through to modern habitats, with commercial equipment as well as naval, vehicles and antique gear, much of it rare or one of a kind. The telephone number is 850-233-5070
