Where to start, by what matters most to you
- Price: the lowest typical home prices are in the rural north and the Panhandle, in counties such as Madison, Hamilton, Holmes and Jackson. With a city close by, Marion around Ocala and Citrus on the Nature Coast both come in under $300,000.
- Income: St. Johns County, between Jacksonville and St. Augustine, has the highest median household income in Florida, $109,839 a year.
- Work and a younger crowd: the big metro counties, Orange around Orlando, Hillsborough around Tampa and Duval around Jacksonville, and the two college counties, Leon and Alachua, where the median age is about 32.
- Retirement: in nine counties more than 30 percent of residents are 65 or older, and in Sumter, where most of The Villages sits, more than half are.
- Schools: the state grades every school district from A to F; for 2025-26, 34 of the 67 were graded A.
- Quiet: nine counties have fewer than 16,000 residents, all but one in North Florida, the Panhandle and the Big Bend.
