Do I need a car inspection in Florida?

No, Florida does not require a safety or emissions inspection to title or register a car, but a car coming from another state needs a VIN check.

A VIN check means someone compares the vehicle identification number on the car with the number on your title or other proof of ownership, and fills out state form HSMV 82042. It is required for used cars, trucks, motorcycles and motor homes not already titled in Florida, and for trailers of 2,000 pounds or more.

A Florida notary public, a licensed Florida dealer, a law enforcement officer from any state, a military police officer or a state compliance examiner can do it. Tax collector service centers can also check the VIN if you bring the car to the office when you title it, though some do not do them in bad weather.

No VIN check is needed for a brand-new vehicle that has never been titled, a vehicle already titled in Florida, a mobile home, a travel or camping trailer, or a trailer under 2,000 pounds. A vehicle brought in from another country must be checked by a state compliance examiner.

The state says new residents must title and register their vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency.

Under state law, a police officer who has reason to believe a car is unsafe may stop it and inspect it. For smaller problems, such as a tailpipe, a muffler, windshield wipers or slightly worn tires, the officer gives written notice to fix it within 48 hours, not counting Sunday.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which handles titles and registrations, answers questions at (850) 617-2000, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
