How do I register my car in Florida?

Within 10 days of establishing residency. Buy the insurance first: Florida needs proof of a policy from an agent licensed in Florida before it registers the car.

Then have the vehicle identification number checked in person, by a law enforcement officer, a military police officer, a licensed Florida dealer or an employee of the county tax collector. For a car you own outright, bring proof of identity, proof of your Florida insurance, the original out-of-state title and the completed application. If a lender holds the title, the paperwork is different, so ask the county's motor vehicle office before you go. Expect a $225 initial registration fee in addition to the title, plate and tax charges, unless you already have a Florida plate in your name from a vehicle you owned before, which can be moved to the new one. A vehicle brought into Florida within six months of buying it owes the state's 6 percent use tax.
