What does Florida charge a new resident for a driver license and car registration?

A new resident moving to Florida with one car pays about $420 to $440 in state and county fees for a Florida driver license, title, license plate and registration, before the cost of the move itself.

Here is what makes up that total. A first Florida driver license is $48, and the county tax collector's office adds a $6.25 service fee that state law requires. Someone who does not drive can get a state ID card for $25 instead.

For the car, there is a one-time initial registration fee of $225 when you buy your first Florida license plate and have no Florida plate to move over from another vehicle. The plate itself is $28. A Florida title for a used car titled in another state is about $85 to $88, depending on whether the title is kept electronically or printed on paper. The yearly registration for a car at the Pinellas County Tax Collector is $28.10 to $46.10, depending on how much the car weighs.

Florida's motor vehicle department says new residents must title and register their vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency, and get a Florida driver license within 30 days. You need Florida car insurance before the car can be titled and registered. A car from another state also needs its vehicle identification number checked, which a Florida notary, a licensed Florida dealer or a police officer can do.

These figures do not include the movers, car insurance, or a second car or driver. For hiring movers, see the answer on checking a moving company.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles lists the state fees on its website and answers questions at (850) 617-2000, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time. The Pinellas County Tax Collector, which handles driver licenses, titles and registrations in that county, is at (727) 464-7777.
