PARKS & OUTDOORS
Smyrna Dunes Park
Volusia County · Atlantic Coast
184 acres on the south shore of Ponce de Leon Inlet at 2995 North Peninsula Avenue.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
More than two miles of elevated boardwalk run through the dunes, wide, wheelchair accessible and capped with recycled lumber, which keeps feet off the dune plants and keeps the dunes from blowing away. Overlooks along the way give the Atlantic on one side, the Indian River on the other, and the inlet straight ahead with the lighthouse across the water. There is an accessible fishing pier three hundred feet long. The beach on the river side allows leashed dogs in the water, which is uncommon on this coast and is the reason many people drive here. Restrooms and picnic pavilions are on site, first come first served. Parking is ten dollars a vehicle, or twenty dollars for an annual pass good at the county inlet parks, and it is free for vehicles registered to disabled drivers and disabled veterans. The gate opens at six in the morning and closes between six and nine at night depending on the season, every day of the year. Alcohol and trailers are not allowed, and buses are kept out on weekends and holidays
