ABOUT THIS PLACE

It was built of brick and first lit in 1887. Construction was supervised by Chief Engineer Orville E. Babcock until he drowned in the inlet in 1884, three years before the light went into service. The tower was built to Light-House Board standard plans with changes for this site. It went on the National Register of Historic Places on September 22, 1972, and was named a National Historic Landmark on August 5, 1998. The tower is open for climbing and the view from the gallery takes in the inlet, the Halifax River and the beach both ways. Three keepers' dwellings have been restored and hold the museum, along with a lens exhibit building. The light in the tower now is a rotating third order lens made by Barbier, Benard et Turenne in 1904. The original first order Fresnel lens served from 1887 until 1933, and the museum also holds an 1867 Barbier et Fenestre lens and an 1860 Henry Lepaute rotating lens. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association runs the site, open seven days a week
