Daytona Beach Boardwalk

Volusia County · Atlantic Coast

The strip at the east end of Main Street, where the amusements have stood since the 1920s.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The concrete promenade went in during the late 1920s. It was called the Broadwalk at first, until a local newspaper editor renamed it for the sake of the advertising. The coquina work and the bandshell were finished in 1938, and the bandshell still puts on free concerts through the summer. The Main Street Pier was built by Thomas Keating in the late 1800s and runs a thousand feet out into the Atlantic, so you can walk out past the breakers without a boat. The rides are the old kind and the new kind mixed together: a Ferris wheel, a Slingshot, the Hurricane, a Tilt-O-Whirl and go-carts. The Sand Blaster roller coaster was taken down in 2019 after a derailment on June 14, 2018, in which two riders fell thirty-four feet and six people were hurt; the state ordered it removed. What is here now is arcades, food, the pier, the bandshell and the beach itself, and the whole thing runs free to walk
