ABOUT THIS PLACE

The spring boil is thirty feet deep and the swimming area is the pool around it, walled and easy to get into. People have lived on this ground for at least six thousand years. Two dugout canoes, five thousand and six thousand years old, were pulled out of the spring in 1985 and 1990, and they are the oldest canoes found anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. Colonel Orlando Rees built the only water-powered sugar mill in Florida here. It worked until 1864, was wrecked during the Civil War, and was rebuilt in the early 1900s. The Schwarze family renovated it in 1961 and opened the Old Spanish Sugar Mill restaurant inside, which has run ever since and is known for one thing: each table has its own griddle and you cook your own pancakes. The Wild Persimmon Trail runs four miles through several habitats, and a half-mile paved nature trail with a boardwalk is built for wheelchairs and leads to a cypress about six hundred years old. Boat tours go out to Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge next door. Open eight in the morning to sundown, every day
