The track opened on February 22, 1959, built by Bill France to get racing off the sand and onto a permanent course.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Before it, cars raced the Daytona Beach Road Course, which used the hard beach itself and a stretch of highway. The speedway sits on 447 acres. The tri-oval measures two and a half miles, with banking of thirty-one degrees in the turns, eighteen degrees at the tri-oval and three degrees on the back straight, which is what lets the cars run flat out the whole way around. The grandstand seats 123,500 and the total with the infield runs higher. Lake Lloyd covers twenty-nine acres inside the 180-acre infield; it is the hole the dirt for the banking came out of, filled with water. The Daytona 500 has run since 1959 and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 since the same year. The Rolex 24, a sports car race that runs around the clock, has been held here since 1962. The Daytona Rising rebuild finished in January 2016 at a reported cost of four hundred million dollars; it took out the backstretch seating and rebuilt the frontstretch as a single long structure with escalators, wide concourses and open air decks
