FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Mystic Jungle Educational Facility

Suwannee County · North Florida & First Coast

A nonprofit big-cat sanctuary at 13429 South Highway 129, Live Oak.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It keeps lions, tigers, bobcats and leopards, along with other animals that had nowhere else to go, and it is registered as a 501(c)3 organization. The place is run by volunteers, and every donation goes to feeding and caring for the animals rather than to salaries. Visits are by tour only, and the animals are not on display to walk-in traffic. General tours run on Saturdays for a ten-dollar donation, and the dates are posted on the sanctuary's Facebook page rather than on a fixed calendar. Private tours can be booked from Tuesday through Sunday with a minimum of four adults, at twenty dollars for an adult and fifteen for a child, with children under three admitted free. A deluxe tour for visitors sixteen and older includes a tiger feeding. Because everything is arranged by appointment, calling ahead at 386-264-8910 is how a visit gets made. For families in this part of north Florida it is one of the few places where a child can stand near a full-grown tiger with a keeper explaining what he is looking at
