ABOUT THIS PLACE
The confluence itself is the reason to come. A short walk from the parking area brings a visitor to an overlook where the two rivers meet and the two water colors take a while to blend. Earthen mounds nearby were thrown up during the Civil War to keep Union gunboats from coming upriver, and a boardwalk leads out to them; rain lilies come up on the mounds after a wet spell. The old Columbus cemetery holds graves from a town that is gone, and two ghost towns on the property have been taken back by sandhill woods. Remains of nineteenth-century steamships are still visible in places. Lime Sink Run and Little Gem Spring are both on the trail network. There are five cabins along the river, a campground, a boat ramp and a canoe and kayak launch. Swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving are not permitted here, which surprises people who expect a spring park. Entry is five dollars a vehicle, and the gate opens at eight in the morning and closes at sunset, every day of the year. The park office number is 386-362-2746
