A waterfront village of shops and seafood restaurants at Madeira Beach, on a pass that a hurricane opened in 1848.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The pass was not here before September 27, 1848. A hurricane cut it through the barrier island that night, and a man named John Levique, remembered locally as a pirate and more reliably as a turtle trader, was the first through it, which is how it got the name. The village that grew on the north side is built as a turn-of-the-century fishing settlement, with a boardwalk along the water and more than a hundred merchants on it, shops and restaurants stacked two deep. The commercial fishing fleet still works out of here, and so do the party boats, dolphin cruises, shelling trips, parasail operators and jet ski rentals. It is the most visited attraction in Pinellas County. Parking is metered on the street with a multi-level garage behind, and the beach is a short walk away. It sits about halfway between St. Petersburg and Clearwater on Gulf Boulevard, and the annual seafood festival each fall fills the whole village
