FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Chihuly Collection
Pinellas County · Gulf Coast
A permanent collection of Dale Chihuly's glass on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, in a building designed around the work.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The collection stands at 720 Central Avenue and is run by the Morean Arts Center, whose main building is a few doors along at 719. It was the first permanent installation of Chihuly's work in a building designed for that purpose rather than adapted to it, and the lighting and the rooms were planned around particular pieces. A sculpture twenty feet tall marks the entrance. Inside are large installations including a ruby red icicle chandelier made for this space, along with works from the Macchia, Ikebana, Niijima Floats, Persians and Tumbleweeds series. Chihuly was one of the people who took glass out of the factory and made it a studio art, and he works at a scale that needs a team, with installations in Venice, Jerusalem and Tacoma. Admission includes a live glassblowing demonstration at the Morean Glass Studio, about 400 feet away at 714 1st Avenue North, where the material is worked in front of the audience
