Henry Flagler's 1902 Gilded Age estate, Whitehall, open as a National Historic Landmark with self-guided tours.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Flagler Museum is Whitehall itself, the Palm Beach estate Henry Flagler completed in 1902. It is a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public with self-guided tours, changing exhibitions and a season program of music and lectures. The museum's own account of the house is that it has had four lives, as a private home, a club, a hotel and finally a museum, and that it came close to being destroyed before the last of them. Flagler built it for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan, as a wedding present and a winter house. Carrere and Hastings designed it with Pottier and Stymus in a Beaux Arts manner modeled on palaces in Spain and Italy: seventy-five rooms across sixty thousand square feet, with marble floors, walls and columns, painted ceilings and heavy gilding. Fifty-five of those rooms have been restored and furnished with period pieces. After Mary Lily died, investors put a ten-story, three-hundred-room hotel addition on the back of it in 1925, and those upper floors came down in 1963. Jean Flagler Matthews, one of Flagler's granddaughters, saved the house from demolition in 1959 by setting up the museum, which opened in 1960. It was made a National Historic Landmark on February 16, 2000. Flagler's private railcar, Number 91, built in Delaware in 1886, stands in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, opened on February 4, 2005
