Boca Raton Museum of Art

Palm Beach County · South Florida & the Keys

A museum that began as a display of borrowed paintings at a 1940s library festival, now at Mizner Park, with its art school still in the original 1962 building.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Boca Raton Museum of Art began when two members of a local library committee, Hildegarde Schine and Roberta MacSpadden, added a display of paintings borrowed from friends and from galleries between Palm Beach and Miami to a library festival in the late 1940s. A thousand people came, out of a winter population barely over 1,500, and the Boca Raton Art Guild was founded on that response in 1950, in a town whose main export at the time was green beans. The Guild bought land in Old Floresta in 1960 and paid sixty-one thousand five hundred dollars for the site and the building in cash, and that 1962 structure still stands on West Palmetto Park Road, where it now houses the museum's art school rather than the museum. The museum itself moved to Mizner Park in 2001, into a 44,000-square-foot building by Donald Singer whose rusticated pink concrete throws deep shadows in the Florida sun
