ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse has been working since 1860, and the historical society's keeper records run from that year through to 1987. It is climbed by a flight of 105 steps, and children have to be at least 48 inches tall to make the climb, which is the thing to check before driving over with a small family. The lighthouse and its museum are run by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society, which is also the managing partner of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area around it. Climbing happens under a permit from the Bureau of Land Management, because the ground it stands on is federal public land rather than a park or a private site. The Outstanding Natural Area takes in the lighthouse, the inlet and the uplands around them, managed by the historical society together with the Bureau of Land Management. The tower is red and stands on a natural rise above the inlet, which is why it carries so far without being especially tall. The museum on the site covers the Loxahatchee River, the Seminole and Spanish periods and the lighthouse's own service, and the keeper records the society holds are among the fuller runs anywhere on this coast
