Mounts Botanical Garden

Palm Beach County · South Florida & the Keys

Twenty acres and more than 7,000 kinds of tropical plant from six continents, in 25 separate gardens on Military Trail.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Mounts Botanical Garden at 531 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach started as one man's idea about fruit. Marvin Mounts, the county's Cooperative Extension Director, wanted an arboretum of tropical fruit trees on the land when the Mounts Building opened there in 1954. The botanical garden itself was created in 1983 and took his name in 1986. It now covers 20 acres and holds more than 7,000 species of tropical and sub-tropical plants gathered from six continents, laid out as 25 separate display gardens. Those include butterfly, rainbow, edible, rose and fragrance, tropical forest and Florida native plant gardens, so a visitor can walk from one idea to the next rather than through one long border. Windows on the Floating World opened on June 18, 2017: a wetland garden of raised walkways built to give the feeling of walking on water, with aquatic displays that change through the year. The Garden of Tranquility, opened in the spring of 2018, is an Asian-inspired garden of stone, bamboo and planting. The county's Cooperative Extension Service owns the garden and runs it in partnership with the University of Florida and a nonprofit friends group
