Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens

Palm Beach County · South Florida & the Keys

The El Cid home and studio of sculptor Ann Weaver Norton, with nine monumental works standing among more than 250 rare palms and cycads.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is the former residence of the sculptor Ann Weaver Norton, widow of the Norton Museum's founder, who established it in 1977 to open her property to the public. Nine monumental sculptures stand in the grounds, eight of them in brick and one in granite, among more than 250 rare species of tropical palms, cycads and native plants on a two-acre site in the El Cid neighborhood beside the Intracoastal. Norton designed the gardens with Sir Peter Smithers and left the largest tract deliberately unmanicured, so the monoliths are come upon in the planting rather than displayed along a path. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, and the property is both a National Trust historic artist's home and a designated arboretum. Ann Weaver Norton was a working sculptor in her own right rather than only the founder's widow, and the monoliths in the grounds are hers. The site is small enough to walk in half an hour and dense enough that people come back to it, and the palm and cycad collection is the reason for the arboretum designation rather than the sculpture
