By the Census Bureau's newest five-year figures, its median household income is $168,403, against $74,568 for Florida as a whole; income per person is $211,607, against $42,609; the median owned home is worth $2 million or more, the highest value the Census reports; and 63.5 percent of the people living there are 65 or older.
Mar-a-Lago, at the south end of the island, is President Donald Trump's estate, known as the Winter White House. Marjorie Merriweather Post built it over four years and opened it in January 1927: a 114-room house on about 20 acres, running from the ocean to the lake. Trump bought it in 1985 and made it a private club, The Mar-a-Lago Club, in 1995. He welcomed 2026 there with a New Year's Eve party, and South Ocean Boulevard is closed for his motorcades when he is in town.
Worth Avenue, named in 1913, is the island's shopping street. In 1918 Addison Mizner and Paris Singer built the Everglades Club at its west end in the Mediterranean style that spread across Palm Beach, and through the 1940s the avenue gained courtyards joined by walking lanes, the vias, among them Via Mizner and Via Parigi.
The Breakers began as Henry Flagler's Palm Beach Inn on January 16, 1896, and took its present name in 1901. Fire destroyed the wooden hotel in 1903 and its replacement in 1925; the present building, designed by Schultze and Weaver with a front modeled on the Villa Medici in Rome, opened on December 29, 1926, and Flagler's heirs still own it. Flagler also built Whitehall as a gift for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, a 75-room house of 100,000 square feet that they used as a winter home from 1902. His granddaughter Jean Flagler Matthews saved it from demolition in 1959, and it opened to the public in 1960 as the Flagler Museum.
The Lake Trail runs 5 and a half miles along the lagoon side of the island, from South Lake Drive near Peruvian Avenue to just north of the Sailfish Club, past old homes and the town docks, looking across the water to West Palm Beach. The rest of Palm Beach County, from Jupiter to Boca Raton, has its own guide.
