Turkey Creek Nature Trail
Okaloosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
A free, mile-long boardwalk along a creek in Niceville, with platforms for swimming.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Turkey Creek Nature Trail in Niceville is a boardwalk about a mile long that follows Turkey Creek through the woods, with platforms where people swim and put in canoes, kayaks and tubes to float the creek. It is run by the City of Niceville, costs nothing to use, and has a pavilion available first come, first served. The round trip comes to about three miles and the boardwalk is broad and fully accessible the whole way. It runs from 340 West John Sims Parkway, off State Road 20 near College Boulevard. Turkey Creek is a clear tannic stream draining sixty-seven square miles of forest on Eglin Air Force Base, running over a sand bottom down to Choctawhatchee Bay. The boardwalk crosses floodplain forest and bayhead swamp, with loblolly bay, cypress, titi, gum and magnolia along it. Six numbered platforms give access to the water, each with a ladder, and tubers bring their own flotation and use the marked put-ins and take-outs. Canoes launch at either trailhead. Restrooms and picnic areas are at the trailhead. Dogs are not allowed. The city runs free transportation to the park for seniors and anyone needing mobility help
